For the runner beans with buttered breadcrumbs, clean the runner beans, i.e. pull off any threads and cut away the ends. Wash well and drain. In a large pot, boil plenty of salted water with a pinch of baking soda. Put in the runner beans and cook for about 5-7 minutes, depending on size, until al dente.

In the meantime, melt the butter in a pan. Sprinkle in breadcrumbs and fry, stirring repeatedly, over not too high heat until golden brown. Season with salt and pepper. Lift out the cooked green beans, drain well and arrange on preheated plates. Sprinkle with the butter crumbs.
