For the Swiss cheese casserole, first preheat the oven to 180 °C and butter an ovenproof dish. Now layer the slices of toast alternately with the cheese like a roof tile.

Whisk the milk with the eggs and season with salt and nutmeg.

The egg milk is poured over the slices of bread and cheese.

Place the buttered dish in a large bowl of hot water and bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for about half an hour until the egg-milk mixture sets. The surface of the Swiss cheese soufflé should then be golden brown.
